Covidien – a leading manufacturer of medical devices, diagnostic imaging agents, and pharmaceuticals – hired Group14 to provide fundamental and enhanced commissioning, LEED services, and energy consulting for its new two-story, 60,000 SF lab in Boulder, Colorado.

The LEED Gold facility featured spaces like tissue labs, tissue storage, bio labs, and chemical storage space. The building exemplified the client’s goal of sustainability through a variety of measures including pursuing a zero-waste policy, having an onsite community garden, and optimizing daylight.

RESULTS:

The project had to meet one of the most aggressive energy code requirements in the country at the time: Annual energy costs 30% less than the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 code baseline. Our energy team worked closely with the client, contractor, and design team to arrive at the most cost-effective energy solutions for the lab.

Through high performance glazing, efficient lighting with occupancy controls, condensing boilers, and indirect evaporative cooling, the project demonstrated 32.7% energy cost savings.
